Imperial guard - HQ - WH 40k

One more post on GW stuff. Purist of historical figures may turn up their noses, don't mind. I spent and still spend time on Warhammer 40k battlefields. Well, I now play twice a year and continues being great time; with a touch of friends reunion lately. Showing up with unpainted figures is a stain on your honour. I have two armies: Imperial guard (recently rebaptised Astra Militarum) and Dark Angels. Here comes the high command of the guard.

Marian Roman - DBA II/49

Today victory had been with enemy, if they had had a victor in command (Plutarch, Life of Caesar, 39, 8)

Six years ago, when I lived in Beijing, I bought two boxes of Italeri republican Romans (infantry and cavalry) in a small hobby shop in Andingmen Nei Dajie. I didn't know what to do with them at that time. They slept three years on a shelf, untouched, and then travelled the whole way from China to Germany. Two years later, I started playing DBA 2.2. They have obviously been my first DBA army: II/49 Marian Roman. Strelets Roman velites and slingers joined in and complete the army. Soon (relatively soon) new figures will be added to align the army composition to DBA 3.0.

Hanoverian Landwehr - Waterloo - BFFFWP

In occasion of the bicentenary of the battle of Waterloo, the guys from the Benno's Figures Forum launched the Bennos Figures Forum Famous Waterloo Project (BFFFWP), a kind of diorama to which anybody contribute with some selected figures. I am happy to be part of the BFFFWP, which also gives me a reason to start this blog. I contribute to the project with two figures:

• a Hanoverian Landwehr infantryman from the KAMAR Hannoveraner Infanterie mit Landwehrmütze Im Karree set; and
• the Hanoverian Landwehr ensign from the Newline Design Hanoverian Landwehr command set.

Prussian dragoon - BFFFWP

One more piece (Prussian dragoon) for the  Benno's Figures Forum Famous Waterloo Project, which is getting closer to its public display at FIGZ 2015. Jan is working on the diorama, meanwhile I have to manage a growing love for nappies.

Brunswick lancer - BFFFWP

It's time for a Brunswick lancer to get into the Benno's Figures Forum Famous Waterloo Project. I need to try in future a Brunswick lancer in a bigger scale. Such a nice uniform colour combination deserves a greater level of details.

My last entry for the Benno's Figures Forum Famous Waterloo Project: Prussian artillery. Next appointment at FIGZ in Arnhem on June 7; then no more nappies for a while on this blog. I'll back to ancients.

Medieval tent

Snooping around in Paul's blog (an amazing and fantastic journey!), I found pretty easy and clear instruction on how to scracth build a medieval tent in scale 1/72. I just needed a camp for my Medieval French DBA army. I went pretty fast, without paying much attention to measurements and details, but it turned out nice. It also impressed wife and daughters; and my brother followed right away with a camp for his 100 year's war English DBA army. Quite a success I would say. Thanks Paul!

Early Germans - DBA II/47 (army completed)

I finally completed my Early Germans DBA army. As said in my post on June 14, it was the first try with dipping. No doubt, you get an army painted and ready for the battlefield in record time. Obviously the result is not as good as with a full base color-highlights-shading process, but they do make quite a good effect on the table. Great! I am ready for my first solo-battle: Marian Romans vs. Early Germans.

Scratch building roads for DBA

Inspired by this post on the Fanaticus site http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/guides/roads/bscarlett.html, I decided to give it a try. Here is my way towards Roman roads for DBA battle in 1/72 scale.

I started from a 0.99 € A4 black craft rubber sheet that I cut into five 20cmx5cm modules. I carved the stone patterns in the first module using a ball pen.

 

I then dry-brushed it with Adeptus Battlegrey, Codex Grey and Ceramite White in sequence, and washed with Devlan Mud.

At last I glued grass flocks on the hedges, and here and there on the pavement.

Yeap, you are right: it doesn't look much as Roman road. I did then the search I should have done earlier,

and carved different stone patterns on the next modules. This time for carving I didn't use a ball pen, as it took too long to get a sharp and deep line on the foam. The tip of a blackhead remover did it much better and faster; disgusting maybe? But the only proper and handy tool I could find around at no cost.

You would agree with me that they are much better. I am happy with results, and going for grass flocks now and some curved modules.
